Everyone loves a ghost story. There’s almost nowhere on earth that doesn’t have tales of the supernatural that have been passed down through generations since time immemorial. Even so, Nottinghamshire seems to have more than its fair share. 

These stories of hauntings in Nottinghamshire, covering the length and breadth of the county, include: 

• The tale of young Bessie Sheppard who was murdered on her way to Mansfield and now haunts the A60 at Harlow Wood
• The spectre of King Charles I who walks around the Saracen's Head Hotel in Southwell
• The distraught spirit of Queen Isobel who dards around Nottingham Castle calling out the name of her lover Mortimer
• A pair of ghostly hands which tried to suffocate a member of staff in room 201 of the Lion Hotel at Worksop
