Detailed information

This study searches for avenues of collaboration between peacekeepers and humanitarian relief worker. Individually the problems of each have been widely scrutinized, but the relationship between them has not. This work evaluates the potential of utilizing the time-proven art of peacekeeping in the support of oft-beleaqued and frustrated humanitarian relief efforts during armed conflicts. The volume examines the experience of past peacekeepers in Africa (the UN operation in the Congo, the OAU in Chad and the Commonwealth Monitoring Force in Zimbabwe), while case-studies on humanitarian efforts in the Sudan, Ethiopia and Mozambique illustrate the problems of modern relief workers in areas of insecurity. The volume also raises the conceptual problems in the interface between security and the delivery of humanitarian aid, and it breaks new ground in producing solutions.
