However, when news of Captain Crewe's death and the loss of his fortune reaches the school, Sara's life is turned upside down. The headmistress, Miss Minchin, takes away Sara's nice clothes and forces her to work as a servant, treating her cruelly. Despite the difficult circumstances, Sara remains optimistic and kind to those around her. She befriends a servant girl named Becky, and the two of them secretly continue Sara's education in the attic. Sara also uses her imagination to cope with the challenges she faces, pretending that she is still a princess.
