Stress, Depression and Alcohol Dependence among migrant workers

This book delves into the intricate mental health and substance use issues faced by migrant workers in Tamil Nadu, India. Through a pilot study involving 32 male workers from North India employed in a local restaurant, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of their psychological and emotional well-being. The study reveals that these migrant workers experience significant stress and depression, largely driven by factors such as social and cultural adjustment challenges, financial instability, and separation from their families.The book highlights a troubling trend: approximately 44% of the participants exhibited moderate alcohol dependence, illustrating a clear link between elevated levels of stress and depression and increased alcohol consumption. It sheds light on how alcohol serves as a coping mechanism for the mental strain these workers endure.
